Illegal mining cause of concern

Clr Hilary Coke has expressed her concern over the illegal mining taking place in the Witfield area.

“Illegal mining is a big problem along the Boksburg mining belt,” she says.

Coke adds that there is illegal mining going on near the dumping grounds in the Angelo informal settlement, and that the residents know about it.

“Those doing the mining scare the residents into not reporting their activities in the area,” she says, adding that the SAPS randomly raid the settlement looking for the illegal miners.

“As a councillor I am aware that the Boksburg North SAPS are concerned about this illegal activity and are sent out to find the miners.”

When residents see the illegal miners and tell them to stop what they are doing, the miners swear at the residents.

According to Coke, there is a red Volkswagen Golf in the Lillianton area which is involved in the mining.

“If the residents see this vehicle they are encouraged to take note of the licence plate number and report it to the SAPS,” she adds.

Coke says illegal mining is a dangerous activity, as it causes sinkholes in the area, which prevents further development.
