Potts set for world stage

EFC Africa heavyweight champion, Ruan “Fangzz” Potts from Boksburg, has been handed a six-match deal to fight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), which is US-based promoted.

The breakthrough will see Potts represent the country and Africa against the finest heavyweight fighters in the world, with his first fight expected to take place in April.

“I have been working hard for a long period of time and effort equals rewards,” he says, after being asked how he felt when learned of the opportunity.

“I feel ready, but a little bit nervous of course, because it’s not only about me now, but I’m representing the country and Africa.

“I want to prove that South African fighters have what it takes to compete on the highest level.”

With fighters not being allowed to represent two different organisations simultaneously, “Fangzz” has been forced to surrender his heavyweight title, which has become vacant, with former champion Andrew van Zyl tipped as one of the favourites to reclaim it.

EFC Africa 27 takes place at Carnival City’s Big Top Arena on Thursday, February 27.
