Dozens of fish die in an apparent polluted dam

Concerned citizens are devastated by the mass death among the fish population in the Witfield Dam, the weekend of Sunday, November 17.

Although the cause of the fish kill is not yet confirmed, the chairperson of SA Carp Society, Francois Pretorius, suspects that the fish had died because of a chemical spill.

Pretorius adds that he has obtained a piece of information that could link a local company to the death of the fish.

“I have also contacted the municipality about the matter and officials have promised to send a team of investigators to the dam to conduct an investigation of such a kill,” adds Pretorius.

When the Advertiser visited the area on Monday afternoon, the dead fish were still floating on the water.

A concerned citizen, Dawn Stephens, also suspects that the fish kill is due to pollution and he mentions that this is not the first fish kill to happen in the dam.

“The previous fish kill was due to sewage spill,” says Stephens.

Another resident, Ray Jacobs says he is very upset at the people who caused the death of the fish.

He also accused the municipality of dealing with the matter frivolously.
