How to make inflatable slime

Inflatable slime is formed from just two main ingredients – polyvinyl alcohol (found in wood glue) and borate ion (borax and water).

Making inflatable slime at home is far simpler than you might think. Here’s how to make it.

What you need

  • Bowl
  • Spatula
  • 1.5 cups wood glue
  • Half a teaspoon of Borax
  • 1 cup warm water
  • Airtight container
  • Food colouring

How to make it

  1. Fill the bowl with wood glue. Try to get as much glue out of the bottle as you can.
  2. Add a few drops of food colouring.
  3. In a cup of warm water, dissolve 1/2 teaspoon of Borax. Then, gradually incorporate the activator into the glue. Stir with a spatula.
  4. Stretch the slime back and forth to create air bubbles. Stretch until the slime is sufficiently inflated.
  5. After your child is finished playing with their slime, put it in an airtight container to keep it from drying out. Slime is best stored at room temperature. The slime will melt if the temperature rises too high. If this occurs, simply add more activator.

Good to know: Slime is best played with on a play table while wearing a smock or an arts and crafts shirt. Slime should not be disposed of in the kitchen or bathroom sinks because it can clog drains.
