Mommy Moments: The home stretch begins

Caxton News journalist, Candyce Krishna, shares what she learnt at her last gynae visit.

THE plot has changed, drastically. Well, for me at least.

Before we get to why there’s been a plot twist in my baby journey, let me tell you what I learned at my last visit to the gynaecologist.

After watching our daughter frolicking around in my amniotic fluid and hearing from my ever-so-polite gynaecologist that she was healthy and growing well, I decided to ask him when it was suitable for me to go on maternity leave.

You see, I planned to work to tipping point in this pregnancy, totally forgetting that this time around, it may not be like my first two when I was in my 20s.

I have been told several times and by several different people that being pregnant in your 30s is no walk in the park. Of course, I didn’t think that I needed to ‘take it easy’ as I’ve been told. “I got this,” I told myself. Clearly, I don’t.

The gynae went on to explain to me that working till the very end was not advisable and that the due date that the ultrasound machine estimates is actually the tenth month of your pregnancy.

Shock! And I’m only learning this in my third pregnancy?

“So if you are still pregnant by your due date, you’re actually 40 weeks pregnant which is 10 months. I advise you to go on leave four weeks before that because a baby can arrive anytime from 36 weeks which is nine months,” he said.

When I got home, I thought about a conversation I had with my mother earlier that week.

“Girls arrive a bit late,” she said.

“That’s an old wives tale. Both the girls (my daughters) arrived on time,” I replied.

It then brought me to the conclusion that I carried my daughters for 10 months and not nine as I was just two days short of their due dates!

Women, we really do have superpowers.

So, the third and final trimester has arrived. I’m 27 weeks pregnant, but man, is it showing me flames. Next week, I’ll tell you more about my other curveball and what I’ve had to do to kinda dodge it.
