Suspects caught stripping hijacked vehicle

The suspects, aged between 19 and 32, will now be profiled to check if they are linked to other cases committed in the province.

THREE suspects were arrested for hijacking a vehicle in the Berea area recently.

According to KZN SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele, a 43-year-old taxi driver reported he was approached by three men wearing balaclavas while he was sitting in his taxi on Lancers Road in Berea.

The incident is believed to have occurred on October 22 at about 12:40.

“They instructed him to move from the driver’s seat to the back and was forced to lie down. They drove away with him and he was dropped off in Wyebank. The matter was reported to KwaDabeka police and a case of carjacking was opened for investigation,” she said.

Mbele said the Provincial Vehicle Task Team received information about three men seen in possession of a white Toyota Quantum that fitted the description of the vehicle that was hijacked in Berea.

“They proceeded to Wushwini Road, Kwangcolosi and caught three suspects in the act of stripping the Toyota Quantum with axes and hammers. They were arrested and detained at the Hillcrest police station,” she said.

In addition, she said the police also seized a white Ford bakkie with vehicle parts and registration plates.
