Discover magical marine life with MzanSea project

The MzanSea project aims to show the community how to care for ocean's many ecosystems.

THE South African Association for Marine Biological Research (Saambr) will take part in the MzanSea project that aims to connect the community with the diverse marine ecosystems in South Africa’s oceans.

A new website (www.mzansea.org), a children’s activity book and a set of fact sheets have been developed as part of the initiative.

The spokesperson for Saambr, Ann Kunz said many people do not know about the marine life in South Africa’s three connected oceans.

“While many people are familiar with the range of ecosystems on land – forest, fynbos, savannah, grasslands – most people struggle to name the aquatic equivalents. Most people think of the sea as just a single biome. However, just as on land, the sea has many different ecosystems, each with their own types of animals,” said Kunz.

The MzanSea initiative will introduce the community to this magical sea world that marine scientists experience.

‘’The MzanSea team are working to help realise the dream of sharing the amazing marine ecosystem diversity in South Africa,” said Prof Kerry Sink, the principal scientist at the South Africa National Biodiversity Institute.

The MzanSea Project was made possible by an international research collaboration known as the One Ocean Hub.
