Fabulous reads – Dive into engrossing historic novel

Book overview - Ida's Line by Barbara Townsend.

Ida’s Line, Barbara Townsend, self published

IIDA’S Line, a historic novel set primarily in Oudtshoorn between 1930 and 1945, tells the tale of Ida Joubert who grows up in a middle class white South African family.

From the outset, it is clear that although she loves her family, particularly her mother, she cannot accept all of their norms and standards. Ida’s choices and actions lead to constant conflict in her family, particularly with her father. Their relationship reaches an impasse when the protagonist falls in love with Reuben May, a coloured teacher who wants to meet her father to ask for his permission to marry her.

The main part of the story unfolds against the backdrop of the rise of fascism in Europe, the activities of pro-Nazi groups in Oudtshoorn, and the systematic loss of political rights for coloured people in the wider South African society. In these different but interlinked arenas of battle, the beliefs, attitudes and experiences of Ida and the people closest to her are revealed.

Another important theme concerns the limited opportunities available for women in the patriarchal society of the time. As the story unfolds, we see the fundamental impact of the choices made by the main female characters.

The book cost is R250, excluding delivery. To purchase a copy, contact Barbara on 083 315 9211 or email wynnetownsend@gmail.com. The book is self-published under the publishing imprint: teapotpublishing.co.za.
