Vaccinated residents eligible to donate blood

If you have received one of the four approved vaccines in South Africa you are still able to donate blood.

THE South African National Blood Service confirmed that residents who have been vaccinated, with any of the approved vaccines, are eligible to donate.

The Department of Health noted that four vaccines have been approved in South Africa by the South African Products Regulatory Authority. These include Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, Sinovac and AstraZeneca.

With the recent looting and unrest in the province, the SANBS office, situated in New Germany, was severely looted. The Pinecrest donor clinic was also affected.

“We encourage businesses and organisations that are open to contact us as we have not had any blood donations for about a week,” said Neelashen Govender, the donor relations practitioner for SANBS.

He added that donor gifts, tools of the trade and some medical tools were looted from the Pinetown branch.

Govender said while staff are trying to find a new venue, mobile clinics are under way.
