Getting to know your grandchildren

The bond between grandparents and their grandchildren is a very special one, but it also needs patience, effort and lots of love.

  • Your grandchildren will love you unconditionally so build a trusting relationship with them so that they always feel they can turn to you.
  • Going for walks, building sandcastles or watching your grandkids on the sports field forces you to be more active and interactive. * A study done at a Boston College indicated that senior citizens who spend more time with their grandchildren, suffer less from depression.
  • Studies have also indicated that if you read to your grandchildren and play games and do puzzles with them, you’ll have a stronger memory than those who don’t.
  • Your grandchildren will astound you with new ideas from their modern world so be interested in what they say. Plus they’ll be more than happy to help you set up your home technology and help you with social media navigation.
  • If you share a hobby with one of your grandchildren, spend time doing it together, passing down family traditions and making new ones.
  • Spoil your grandchildren, but write them letters and tell them stories about your life experiences too.
  • Covid allowing, be present at special occasions like birthdays and Grandparents’ Day at school.
  • Consider moving closer to your family if you live far away from them.
  • Laugh at your grandchildren’s jokes, tell them yours and let life be a little less serious when they are with you.
