Handbag maintenance

The lifespan of your handbag depends on how you treat and take care of it.

Handbags are not just bags we use to carry our belongings when we go out or go to work — they are an important accessory. Just like shoes, handbags can say a lot about the owner hence it is necessary to keep them well-maintained. Handbags of all sizes, shapes, colour and material should always be maintained and cleaned to expand their lifespan.

If you are a handbag lover and want to know more about taking care of your babies, here are some tips:

Keep the stuffing paper to maintain the shape

Most handbags don’t look as good as they did when they were still new. They lose shape and look more stretched than they initially were. This is because of shape negligence and this can be avoided. Instead of tossing the stuffing paper that comes with the bag, keep it. It is strong and can be reused every time your bag is empty. This helps to maintain the shape of the bag, making it look new even after months of usage.

Empty it at least once a week

An integral part of handbag maintenance, especially if you use it regularly, is emptying it at least once a week. While this is a basic hygiene tip, it also benefits the lining of the bag. The material inside the handbag tends to get dirty quicker than the outside because of all the stuff that goes in and out of it. When you empty it, you avoid things like ink spillage, paper clutter and also clear out any pieces of food you might have had in there. This will save the lining of your handbag in the process.

Wipe or wash it

This depends on the material of the handbag. Some handbags are easier to clean compared to others. For example, a handbag made from cotton can be tossed in the washing machine for a good wash and will still look great, but you can’t do the same with a leather bag. If you can’t wash it, then wipe it with a small dose of soap on a wet cotton cloth or even non-alcoholic wet wipes. Some handbags – especially designer ones, have a recommended spray made specifically for them, which can clean the outside of the bag without damaging it.

Change it

Most people have at least one handbag dedicated for either work or school purposes. Using a bag regularly can wear it out quicker than usual and this can reduce its lifespan, causing it to lose shape, tear, or even fade the colour. To avoid this, try to switch it up by having an alternative handbag. This will help your handbag last longer and serve you better.

Handbags are an integral part of our daily lives. These tips can come in handy for their maintenance, which can save you money in the long run.
