First South African Indian story to be streamed online

The play will premiere online on TicketPro’s platform on 23 September from 7.30pm, as part of Heritage month.

THE Aryan Benevolent Home (ABH) presents a theatre-first fundraising initiative, the streaming of Rajesh Gopie’s acclaimed play Tamasha on Hope Street, directed by Gopala Davies.

Filmed live at Johannesburg’s Market Theatre, the play will premiere online on TicketPro’s platform on 23 September from 7.30pm, as part of Heritage month and the play will also support the ABH fundraising drive as it faces challenging times during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The ABH is a registered national Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) that offers care and shelter to 700 residents which include the aged and frail, victims of violence and abuse, children in need and the mentally and physically challenged. Proceeds from the livestream of the award-nominated play will be donated to the ABH.

Tamasha on Hope Street was nominated for seven Naledi Theatre Awards, including best Production, best Actor (Lindani Nkosi), best Actress (Ameera Patel), best Supporting Actor (Afzal Khan), best Design (Wilhelm Disbergen), best Director (Gopala Davies) and best Script (Rajesh Gopie).

The play provides an unapologetic glimpse into the hardships faced by people living on the margins of society. With an unrelenting gaze, it focuses on the themes of xenophobia, the abuse of women, drugs and poverty and prostitution but also ultimately of hope.

The play is suitable for viewers aged 16 and older.

Online tickets are available via Ticketpro at R100.
