Maclean returns to sing the blues under Zulu skies

Legendary blues singer and story teller, Doc Maclean will be performing 2 shows in Durban as part of his fourth N'ganga Blues African tour.

LEGENDARY blues singer and storyteller, Doc Maclean will be back under the Zulu skies for his fourth African tour, N’ganga Blues.

Maclean will be doing 60 shows across the country, including two in Durban, St Clements and Crusaders, Durban North on 14 and 15 March respectively.

The long-bearded American singer has developed a spiritual connection with South Africa during his four tours where he mentors several local blues and traditional artists.

“N’ganga. The healer. This thing we call Blues. I’ve rolled the bones all over the map. Sixty throws. Sixty shows: they shadow South Africa. No place too large, too small, too grand or too humble. When you roll the bones, you could come up snake eyes. Or you could score big. That’s what the Old Man used to say,” said Maclean.

The tour promises to be a unique experience of an artist at the height of his powers.

Maclean is a rolling stone artist from rural America, his music and storytelling pays homage to his former delta blue mentors like Son House, Peg Leg Sam, and Sam Chatmon.

The art of telling songs and singing stories came from Africa and was passed down from mouth to mouth right to the Mississippi delta. N’ganga Blues celebrates this relationship and explores this continuing journey.

“I’ve been a full time touring blues artist for nearly 50 years. I tell songs and sing stories and share this strange journey with you.said. “I’ve played Durban a few times now and I love the way folks party down. It must be the tropical air coming in off the Indian Ocean,” Maclean said.
