Swanky fashion and music served up at Isicathamiya contest

The Playhouse Company’s National Isicathamiya Competition 2019 is on 21 September.

THIS year’s Playhouse Company’s National Isicathamiya Competition takes place through the night on Saturday, 21 September starting at 6pm in The Playhouse Opera Theatre.

The competition attracts some 90 dedicated Isicathamiya groups from throughout South Africa, stretching from Transkei and across the whole of KwaZulu-Natal, including groups from Gauteng, to compete for prize money totalling R200 000.

This celebration of the traditional music genre, made famous by Grammy award-winners, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, has long occupied a pride of place on KZN’s arts calendar, attracting great numbers of the groups’ as well as members of the public who thrill to the spectacle and discipline of this endearing art form.

A fashion extravaganza is another element to the competition for some 55 men and women, during interludes interspersed during the competition. The women compete in the category known as Onobuhle (beauty queens) while the men show their paces in the category known as Oswenka (swanking). This fun event invariably generates much enjoyment from the audience who delight in the glamourous side of Isicathamiya culture.

Tickets are available via Webtickets and Pick ‘n Pay outlets at R100. Alternatively, contact the Playhouse box office on 031 369 9540 or 031 369 9596. Discounted group bookings are on offer. Special discounted parking is available for all Playhouse patrons at the Albany/Royal Hotel parking.
