Local surf film Deep End wins big at awards

The film is inspired by Eubulus Timothy's childhood in apartheid Durban.

LOCAL Surf Film, Deep End walked away with the award Best Film at the 6th Annual Simon Sabela Film and Television Awards, while its director and co-writer Eubulus Timothy won the award for Best Director.

The awards were held at the Playhouse. Timothy, who co-wrote the film with his daughter Teerajeh Timothy, said that it was uplifting and emotional to be recognised in one’s own hometown.

Set on the shorelines of Durban’s Golden Mile beaches, Deep End brings one of the world’s most popular surfing sites to glorious life. The film is inspired by Eubulus Timothy’s childhood in apartheid Durban.

He had spent years developing the story and finally brings it to the screen with the support of the KwaZulu-Natal Film Commission, the Department of Trade and Industry, and an extraordinary cast and crew.

Among those in attendance were the representatives from the Brics countries, local and International delegates of the acclaimed Durban International Film Festival and the Durban Film Mart, crème de la crème of the local film and television Industry, officials from other provinces and the general public.There were over 300 entries from the industry, for this year’s awards.
