Amaphiko Academy ends on high note

The public was also treated to pop up entertainment.

LOCAL born artists, DJ Zinhle and Nasty C took center stage at the KZN Music House on the last day of Red Bull Amaphiko Academy. It was a celebration of art, fashion and technology which ended with a vibrant music festival

After an 8-day residential camp at the Red Bull Amaphiko Academy, the social entrepreneurs were joined by the public and various artists in celebrating creative innovators who are changing the world. Host, Hlubi Mboya kicked off the main stage with an opening set by local DJ Black Major. The event which, boasted 2 powerful couch sessions, 4 strong KZN artists, 4 film screenings, 18 exhibitions and 7 food vendors was a thrill for the Durban public.

Gagasi FM’s Nomfanelo Dlomo facilitated a powerful Women in Innovation panel discussion with fashionista Nandi Madida, founder of ChemStart Bathabile Mpofu and CEO of Innovate Durban, Aurelia Albert. The second talk was facilitated by cultural practitioner Russel Hlongwane and included house DJ and entrepreneur DJ Zinhle, legendary storyteller MamGcina Hlophe and founder of ZuluGal Retro Nozipho Zulu on the panel. The discussion focused on the business of the arts, with MamGcina reminding the audience that KZN is the foundation of creativity and that it’s important to honor one another.

Award winning hip-hop artist, Nasty C wowed the crowd with some of his hit favourite songs. His performance was followed by DJ Zinhle, who had the crowd dancing into the sunset. The rest of the festival featured exhibitions by previous and current social entrepreneurs, including Murendeni Mafumo (founder of Kusini Waters), Renshia Manuel (founder of GrowBox) and Lindokuhle Duma (founder of Iziko stoves). The public was also treated to pop up entertainment including breakdancing, soccer tricksters, and the Maker Space.
