Feast of one act plays at theatre club

A theatre festival will be held at Westville Theatre Club during April.

NINE one-act plays, organised into three groups, will be showcased at a theatre festival at the Westville Theatre Club from 2 to 13 of April.

Group one opens with a South African Writers’ Circle award winning drama, Miracle Makers, about an alternate story of Nelson Mandela, a play with a twist you won’t see coming. Following this is a South African play, Iwisa – the Fist, themed about knowledge empowerment, youth politics, brotherly love against xenophobia and identity. To end the evening, a light-hearted comedy, The Better Half, is set in a typical rugby supporter’s household. Show dates are 2, 5, 9 and 12 April.

Group two is filled with family-friendly farces that will deliver a hefty dose of laughter. The Tell-Tale Teacher, set in a classroom where children are left to solve a mystery of their missing teacher, is a humorous play directed by the youngest director of the festival at only age 11. Thereafter, go back in time to the 19th century Russia where a long-time friend and neighbour has come to make a Proposal to his neighbours’ daughter. Unaware of his intent, the daughter and the neighbour get into a series of arguments over trivial matters that result in tempers flaring, heart palpitations and hysterics. A Cut Above the Rest takes the audience to a funeral of a wealthy Ms Davenport where there are more suspects than guests who all want a piece of her legendary diamond necklace. Show dates are 3, 6 (matinee), 10, and 13 April (matinee).

Group three is not for the faint-hearted and is for mature audiences only. Be prepared for violence, thrill and adult comedy. Caught in the Act is a comedy where two characters wake up in bed together but have no idea how they got there or who they are. Faith, throws the audience into a deeply emotional crime drama of abuse and murder where the heroine fights for her life. Finally, be transported into a seemingly regular household that turns an ordinary luncheon into a chilling bloodbath in You Do Love Me Don’t You. Show dates are 4, 6, 11 and 13 April.

Cost is R100 per person per night. Get further discounts if booking for more than one show. Children pay R50 for Group two. Shows start at 7pm and matinees start at 3pm.
