The Playhouse Company has great educational theatre on offer for school learners.

THE Playhouse Company has a wealth of great educational theatre on offer for school learners in the months ahead.

Events include The Magic Drum, the company’s year-end entertainment this December, and its three upcoming schools productions, Silent Screams, Sizwe’s Triumph Over Sumdanger, and Masihambisane (Let’s walk together), which are to be performed during the Schools’ Season in February 2019.

The Magic Drum runs in The Playhouse Grand Foyer between 6 and 15 December. The Magic Drum takes the audience on a journey to a village in the beautiful forest of Mathuthu Wonders, where a magical drum controls the order.

With its underlying moral theme promoting integrity among young people, audiences are given a special experience of rhythmic sounds, boom-bap rap and sing-along tunes sure to leave a lasting memory.

Tickets for school groups at shows from 4 to 7 December at 10am are R30 per learner. Public performances on 8, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 December are at 2.30pm. Tickets are R60 for adults and R30 for children. Book at Computicket or call 031 369 9540 (office hours).

Booking has opened for the Playhouse Company’s three 2019 Schools productions.

Masihambisane motivates students to get involved in dance and art programmes at a young age. Important life lessons are discussed through dance storytelling, helping to motivate students to work hard and follow their dreams. The production, targeted for Grade 4 to Grade 7 learners, enabling them to follow an artistic career path, runs between 25 February and 9 March. Tickets are R30 per learner.

The role of women in South African society is explored in the emotional Silent Screams, which takes the audience on a journey through the lives of six characters, which also celebrates the heroines of the liberation movement, in particular, Winnie Mandela and Victoria Mxenge. Beginning with the first ever Women’s March of 1913, through to the 1956 March, and culminating with the recent Women’s Total Shutdown, this contemporary play engages young and old on issues that continue to affect women. The production plays between 4 and 16 February. Cost is R30 per learner.

With the scourge of bullying in schools affecting many learners, Sizwe’s Triumph over Sumdanger draws attention to this pernicious social issue, and to its side effects of substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, and more bullying. This valuable awareness project will tour three districts in KwaZulu-Natal between 4 and 22 February, followed by a run in eThekwini from 25 to 28 February. Tickets are R30 per learner.
