WIN: Songs of protest, persuasion and politics

If history is the story of man’s struggle for betterment, then protest music is the soundtrack to that struggle.

RHUMBELOW Theatre Tina’s Hotel, 14 Beryldene Road, Kloof, presents Chimes of Freedom – Songs of protest, persuasion and politics from Friday, 12 to Sunday, 14 October.

If history is the story of man’s struggle for betterment, then protest music is the soundtrack to that struggle. Whether grabbing attention, entertaining people or upsetting those with a guilty conscience, protest songs have always reflected and sometimes even influenced the changing times.

Multi-instrumentalist Richard Haslop, veteran bluesman Will Wallace and folk musician Mike Raftery join forces to present this show. Armed with seven instruments – acoustic and electric guitars, dobro, mandolin, resonator, weissenborn and bouzouki – this unique trio will present powerful songs from the familiar Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Paul Simon, and some that just have to be heard, ranging from the 1700s Jacobite rebellions to today’s Brexit headlines.

The show starts at 8pm on Friday and Saturday and at 2pm on Sunday. The venue opens 60 minutes before the show for drinks. For restaurant reservations contact 031 764 7843.

Tickets are R150 and R130 concessions. Booking is essential through Computicket or contact Roland on 082 499 8636, roland@stansell.co.za or info@durbantheatre.com.
