All aboard for festive fun

Durban Port Festival celebrates All Things Heritage this year.

THE focus will be on diversity as Durban Port Festival celebrates All Things Heritage this year in the harbour from Saturday, 29 September, 11am to 8pm and Sunday, 30 September, 11am to 6pm.

Festivities kick off on Saturday with a parade. Then port-goers can board and tour real-life SA Navy ships, tugboats and other watercrafts stationed at the N Shed passenger terminal. There will also be a showcase exhibition of maritime careers and opportunities for small and medium businesses. Other activities will include a sail-past and regatta, sea rescue displays, jet ski demos and a tugboat ‘dance.’

The main festivities are in the vicinity of Royal Natal Yacht Club where visitors can enjoy guided tours at the Port Natal Maritime Museum, live entertainment, a mini market with arts and crafts stalls. In addition, there will be an automotive exhibition while face painting, competitions, jumping castles and rides will keep the kids happy.

The festival’s lifestyle village will offer food and drinks for all tastes, including popular outlets, food trucks, a shisanyama, local stallholders, a gin pop up bar, a wine pop up bar, a sushi bar and a beer garden.

On Sunday, the programme kicks off at 7am with a free 5km fun run for up to 200 festival ticket holders. Register at www.durbanportfestival.co.za/fun-run/.

Gates open at 10am at the N-Shed (Durban cruise terminal) via Port Entrance 3, Quayside Road (off Margaret Mncadi / Victoria Embankment), as well as at Port Festival Island which is in the vicinity of the Royal Natal Yacht Club / BAT Centre/ Port Natal Maritime Museum.

Take blankets, picnic mats and folding chairs. Don’t bring gazebos and picnic umbrellas. Festival entry is R30 for adults and R15 for children under the age of 13.
