VUMA is a DocuSeries about the role of Kwaito music will be screened at the Chairman.
NEW DocuSeries, Vuma, focuses on the role of Kwaito music in the revolution of urban culture in South Africa screens at The Chairman in Durban on Thursday at 6pm.
The screening is part of three day program which serves as a catalyst for a creative union and trade among black artists residing in and around KZN. Director and producer of Vuma, Vincent Moloi, says it is important for young South Africans to own and tell their own stories.
“Kwaito is an identity of youth and naturally this makes it a big part of a South African identity as the youth are in the majority. Films are supposed to influence and reflect the psyche of our society and cultural expression is important to understanding your society. It’s very frustrating that most history is told by other communicators but not filmmakers. Today we can read so much about our cultural icons but there is not equal coverage in accessible audio visual format,” explains Moloi.

According to programme organiser, Rethabile Skosana, there are many dimensions to our everyday lives that are often overlooked and lay inactivated and therefore uncelebrated. It is our duty to alight these gems that define our character and impact our lives on a daily basis.
“Our objective is to grow and retain a healthy and diverse creative industry in KZN without superimposing or appropriating culture. We welcome the development of The Heritage Quarters which sits at the birthplace of Durban trade as we know it. Through this project, we aim to speak to the rich history of this area while exploring and contributing possible social, cultural and economic landscapes for the city. This culminates into shared value urbanism, creating new pockets of opportunity between actors and investors from different sectors,
By so doing we aim to Embracing and retaining a strong local identity,” concluded Skosana.
