Malombo drums on Rainbow stage

"It had been far too long since we had heard the Malombo drums on The Rainbow stage."

TWO days after Thabang Tabane and Rainbow Restaurant owner Neil Comfort agreed terms for his concert, his father, legendary guitarist and father of Malombo Jazz, Dr Phillip Tabane died. On Saturday, the young Tabane and his band will be performing at the Rainbow Restaurant with special guest Madala Kunene.

“It had been far too long since we had heard the Malombo drums on The Rainbow stage. The father of Malombo Jazz, Dr. Philip Tabane was the leader of the first group to ever perform on The Rainbow stage, way back in May 1983. I asked Thabang if he wanted to postpone the concert in light of his father’s passing, his reply was, “My father was a spiritual being and he expressed himself through music. He passed on the culture to me and I too express myself through music. This tour is a way of me healing and at the same time expressing myself to the world,” said Comfort.

Tabane will perform on Malombo drums and will be joined by Dennis Magagula on Djembe and toys, Mpho Tswale on keyboard and Bafana Ndlovu on bass guitar. Durban guitar great Madala Kunene will join the performance as a guest, no doubt to pay respect to his friend and contemporary Africanist.

The Rainbow Restaurant is at 23 Stanfield Lane, Pinetown. The show is expected to start between 4pm and 6pm. Entrance is free and for booking enquiries you can contact 031 702 9161.
