Classical feast at Michaelhouse festival
The Michaelhouse Festival of Music will be held from 11 to 13 May.
EXPECT an eclectic feast of multi-genre music at the fourth Michaelhouse Festival of Music from 11 to 13 May.
Kicking off the festival, the effervescent feel-good KZN Wind Orchestra will open the festivities in the Chapel. Next on the programme will be the celebration of 30 years of the Music School, taking place appropriately in the Music School where students will entertain audiences while you can enjoy a meal.
Opening the programme on Saturday will be resident organist Abri Venter performing a carefully-chosen programme of classics and more contemporary pieces. Venter will be joined by guest musicians during the concert.
Nationally recognised pianist, Lara Kirsten will perform an intriguingly-entitled recital: The Resonating Pulse which brings together explorations of sound and word into one celebration to encompass a range of thought provoking feelings.
Early Sunday morning the chapel hosts Audrey Mbuyazi and friends with a performance entitled A Spiritual Journey. Mbuyazi celebrates a decade as a solo artist, in this performance she will share some of her favourite songs and moments, and she will reveal a sneak peak into the next ten. For this spiritual feast, she will be joined by the Clifton School Adults Choir and other guest artists.

A concert for young and old, a smorgasbord of voices combine for the Choral Elite Concert. Joining forces, the KZN Midlands Youth Choir, the Christ Church Prep Senior Choir, Clifton Notties Prep Choir, the PMB Children’s Choir, and the Vox Amicis perform a selection of beautiful choral music.
Just after midday, the Young Performers Concert features the KZN Philharmonic Ensemble conducted by Michaelhouse’s William Silk. They will be joined by the KZN Midlands Youth Choir making their second appearance of the day featuring a number of wonderfully-talented young soloists.
The Trio Appassionato is renowned Durban pianist, Andrew Warburton together with husband and wife duo, violinist Violeta Osorhean and French horn player Sorin Osorhean. They will play a collection of great pieces from the chamber music repertoire for violin, French horn and piano.
Finally, the Grand Finale takes place in the Schlesinger Theatre. The Magic of the Music in the Midlands concludes the weekend’s musical line-up. Silk holds the baton in this much anticipated concert, featuring the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra with musical legends PJ Powers and Khan Morbee. They will be supported by the KZN Midlands Youth Choir, the Clifton Notties Prep Choir, Christ Church Prep Senior Choir and the local residents, the Michaelhouse Chapel Choir and a number of guest soloists.
