"It is our mandate to promote local authors and develop the community."

THE month of March is jam-packed with events for book lovers and literature enthusiasts. The Libraries and Heritage Department, District 7 and 10 will be hosting an authors’ seminar and a book launch on 14 March at Brettonwood High School in Umbilo from 9.30am to 1.30pm.

Authors that will be featured at the seminar include, Dr Deena Padayachee, Sandmir Sewmungal, Deepak Panday, Sanele Gamede, Mbali Gcabashe, Richard TLS Colombe, Sphesihle Mthana.

Senior Librarian at Musgrave Library, Sibo Doncabe said: “It is our mandate to promote local authors and develop the community. Our core function is to promote reading and literacy in our community since UNESCO has announced Durban as the city of Literature. The target audience is the community, local authors and grade learners.”

Following the seminar is SA Library Week from 16 to 23 March with the theme Libraries: Heart of the Community. It was initiated in 2001 by the Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) to be a commemorative period recognised by government and an opportunity for all types of libraries across the country to market their services in an effort to contribute to the understanding of the important role that libraries play in a democratic society, advancing literacy, making the basic human right of freedom of access to information a reality, and to promote tolerance and respect among all South Africans. Libraries across the country use this annual event as an opportunity to market their services to the users, the broader community, civil society and also decision makers.

Coinciding with the two events, is the 21st Time of the Writer International Festival from 12 to 17 March. Fifteen authors from across Africa and the world are expected to descend to Durban .The writers convene under this year’s theme of Changing the Narrative and will engage with this notion as it relates to their work and the direction in which literature is moving towards in this context.
