Award-winning performances for Playhouse

Don't miss two outstanding performances this week, as part of the South African Women's Arts Festival.

THEATRE-GOERS can look forward to two outstanding performances during the Playhouse Company’s 21st South African Women’s Arts Festival roster, from 16 to 19 August.

Suddenly the Storm, Paul Slabolepszy’s latest play, walked off with Best New South African Script (Paul Slabolepszy), Best Theatre Set Design (Durban’s Greg King) and Best Lighting Design (Wesley France) awards this year’s Naledi Theatre Awards.

Suddenly the Storm is set in the far East Rand, in the home of an ageing ex-cop and his much younger wife. A storm approaches – Namhla Gumede, born on 16 June 1976 arrives, seeking answers to questions that have remained buried for 40 long years. What begins as a smoldering dark comedy turns suddenly into a roller-coaster ride of startling revelations, of rage and recrimination, before the storm finally breaks.

The performance will be staged on 10 and 11 August in The Playhouse Company’s Loft Theatre at 7.30pm, and on 12 August at 2pm and 7.30pm. Tickets for these performances are available via Computicket or Shoprite Checkers at R80 each. There is an age restriction of 18 (strong language).

The second performance is the award-winning drama, Scorched, which gained three Naledi Theatre Awards this year: Best Director of a Play (Jade Bowers), Best Lead Performance in a Play: Female (Ilse Klink) and Best Supporting Actress (Ameera Patel).

Scorched is an epic yet intimate family drama by acclaimed Lebanese-Canadian playwright Wajdi Mouawad. The play follows twins Janine and Simon Marwan on a riveting journey to the heart of their mother’s war-torn middle-Eastern homeland in pursuit of their tangled roots and a long-lost sibling. In this land, where civil war, massacre and revenge constitute a way of life, the twins uncover shocking secrets about their mother’s history, about themselves and their origins.

Schools performances, at R30 per learner, can be booked by calling 031 369 9407. Public performances are at 7.30pm on 18 August, and 2.30pm and 7.30pm on 19 August. Tickets available via Computicket or Shoprite Checkers at R80 each. There is an age restriction of PG13.
