City launches youth programmes for June

EThekwini Municipality has a number of events planned around Youth Month which the mayor says will empower the youth.

ETHEKWINI Municipality will host a number of youth empowerment events during June, which is observed as Youth Month.

This was announced by mayor Zandile Gumede at a meeting of EXCO on 13 June. Gumede said the youth programme for June had been launched on Saturday 10 June where the city had outlined its vision for young people.

“I fully support the youth development strategy for the City in terms of business, sports, skills, the arts and all other sectors. We will host a number of programmes throughout June where youth will be empowered,” she said, adding that this included a Youth Imbizo on radical economic transformation on 14 June at the uThongathi Outspan grounds..

On 17 June, a celebration will be held at Mpumalanga Stadium, Hammarsdale to commemorate Youth Day to which more than 5 000 young people will be invited.

Two further youth Imbizos unpacking the City’s Radical Economic Transformation Framework and how youth can maximise the opportunity will be held on 19 June and 24 June respectively. More than 1 000 young people will be accommodated at each Imbizo.

The final event lined up is a Youth Council on 26 June where youth will get the opportunity to talk about development issues affecting them in the City.

The mayor also issued a stern warning to individuals who use her name as the Mayor of eThekwini without permission to promote their events in the City, to cease from doing so.

“I am not against the arts or events being hosted in the City, but if you want mayoral involvement you must follow the proper procedures and processes,” she said.
