Dance, Drama, Food and Fashion at The Playhouse this weekend

The Playhouse will transform into a melting pot of African culture through a celebration of arts, food and fashion.

WITH Africa month coming to end, the Playhouse will transform into a melting pot of African culture through a celebration of arts, food and fashion during The Playhouse Africa aLIVE! Festival in commemoration of Africa Month this weekend.

Experience first-hand the culinary expertise of celebrity chefs Lentswe Bhengu (Africa on a Plate, Taste Africa fame) on Friday at 5.40pm and Siphokazi Mdlankomo (author of My Little Black Recipe Book and host of cooking show Let’s eat with Siphokazi) on May 27 at 5.40pm as they conduct live cooking demonstrations.

Enjoy a culinary trail through Nigeria, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Morocco and Swahili Cuisine (Tanzania & Kenya) via a selection of food stalls. Each respective stall is designed to provide patrons with a taste and cultural experience fashioned on its respective African country.

Feel a range of fabrics from each country, smell various spices specific to their regions, see arts and crafts from their community, taste their unique cuisine… and the best part is, delicious eats are for sale too!

 

 

The theatre will also be wrapping up The Playhouse Company’s New Stages season is the back-by-popular-demand dance production We Are Still Marching.

Choreographed by Sunnyboy Motau of Moving Into Dance Mophatong (MIDM), this acclaimed work will feature the dancers from two award-winning dance companies: MIDM and The Playhouse Dance Residency (PDR). The piece explores the struggles faced by women in Southern Africa from the apartheid era until the present day.

Also as part of the festival and curated by fashionista extraordinaire, Derrick Mhlongo – The Playhouse Fashion Show celebrates all things African, by Africans, for the African and the global community at large. Expect to see top designers Amanda Laird Cherry, Nguni Shades, Zarth, Lindiwe Kuzwayo and more featured. The show takes place on Friday at 8.10pm.

All tickets for We Are Still Marching are available via Computicket or Shoprite Checkers. General entry to The Playhouse Africa aLIVE! Festival is free. Discounted parking available at The Royal Hotel parkade and The Albany Hotel Parkade.
