Comedians battle it out at Bat Centre

The Next Generation Comedy was launched a year ago to unearth local talent in the industry.

THE Next Generation Comedy show series, started a year ago as a smallscale Durban initiative to unearth local talent in the industry, has gone national and attracted the likes of The Cape Town Comedy Club and Goliath Comedy Club. Now at a stage of a national competition, the show is coming back to where it all began.

To celebrate the one year anniversary, 20 comedians will be competing for two grand comedy prizes valued at R40 000 over two nights at the Bat Centre from 19 May to 20 May.

The shows will be hosted by South African comedy legend Kurt Schoonraad, owner of Cape Town Comedy Club and Nicholas Goliath owner of Goliath Comedy Club.

Each night will have a different winner who will win an all expenses paid trip to perform at the two prestigious comedy clubs in Cape Town and Johannesburg. The show was conceptualized by Durban comedian Carvin H Goldstone to help develop Durban’s young comedy industry.

Goldstone said the concept has become so successful that it has now been expanded to Johannesburg and Cape Town with Next Gen shows being held at Grand West Casino and Goliath Comedy Club.

“Its very exciting and fulfilling to see these young comics come so far so quick. A year ago we had so few acts in Durban and people were tired of seeing the same people over and over. Now we have over 30 new comedians. That’s 30 new points of view and 30 new points of funny. New styles and skills,” he said.

Tickets for the show are available at quicket.co.za or call 079 400 5093
