Award-winning musicians for recital

THE next Friends of Music recital is on Tuesday 25 April at Durban Jewish Centre, 44 KE Masinga (Old Fort) Road, Durban at 7.30pm.

Violinist, Jacqueline Martens and pianist, Sulayman Human will perform at the recital. Jacqueline has performed at venues such as Cadogan Hall, Royal Festival Hall, Wigmore Hall and Eaton Square.

In 2013 she played Shostakovich Concerto No. 1 with the Chandos Symphony Orchestra and in 2014 took part in the sold out concert in the Royal Albert Hall.

Over the last 2.5 years she has lead the London Firebird Orchestra. She is now on trial as an extra first violinist in the London Philharmonic Orchestra and will lead the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in 2017.

In 2010 Sulayman was the youngest winner of the Lionel Bowman Beethoven Bursary Competition but the first and only person to this day to have won it while still in secondary school.

In 2012 Sulayman won the Hennie Joubert National Piano competition and Atterbury National Piano competition, in 2013 he was the overall winner of the SACS music competition and in 2015 he was a semi-finalist at the 2015 UNISA national competition.

Their programme will include Mozart’s Adagio in E major, K 261, Hofmeyr’s Laumereva, Strauss’ Sonata for violin and piano in E flat Major, op.18, Beethoven’s Sonata no.1 in D Major op.12, Massenet’s Meditation from Thais Camille and Saint-Saens’ Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, op.28.

Prelude performer is soprano Lungile Cele, a Grade 12 learner at Northlands Girls’ High School where she is learning music with Jenny Bonsignore. She will be accompanied by Bobby Mills.
