The Gypsy Strings will perform at the first Friends of Music recital for 2017.

THE first Friends of Music recital for 2017 featuring The Gypsy Strings is on 31 January at the Durban Jewish Centre, 44 KE Masinga (Old Fort) Road, Durban, at 7.30pm.

It’s a recital not to be missed, a colourful bouquet of Balkan Classical Folk Tunes performed by the new KZN ensemble known as Gypsy Strings. The music programme features arrangements from Bartok, Martinu, Vladigerov and many others. The performers are well known KZN Philharmonic players Ralitza Macheva (Bulgaria) Annamaria D’Andrea (Italy) and Ralitsa Pechoux (Bulgaria) all on strings. The drums are brought together by the excellent percussionism of Stephan Pechoux (France).

Prelude performer is Nontobeko Bhengu (soprano). She started singing at the age of seven, took lessons with internationally acclaimed baritone Mandla Mkhize and received a gold medal for singing “Contessa Perdona” in the Opera Voices South Africa Competition. She is currently the best national soloist in the ABC Motsepe Schools Choral Eisteddfod.

Tickets are R80 for members, R100 for visitors and R20 for orchestral members and students.
