Learn how to be a clown

Clowns Without Borders South Africa is encouraging people to join a clowning workshop in Umbilo this month.

CLOWNS Without Borders South Africa (CWBSA) is hosting a three-day clowning workshop in Durban, from 27 to 29 October at Rhumbelow Theatre, 42 Cunningham Road (off Bartle Road), Umbilo from 9.30am to 4pm.

CWBSA is looking for a range of KwaZulu-Natal based artists wanting to develop their clowning skills and social upliftment engagement through the intensive workshop. CWBSA is an artist-led humanitarian organisation highly dedicated to improving the psychosocial condition of children and communities in areas of crisis through laughter and play.

The workshop, generously subsidised by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, will be led by artistic director, Jayne Batzofin. Having seven years of experience developing her clowning pedagogy, ranging from the circus, to theatrical, to hospital clowns, Jayne loves these intensive play sessions.

The workshop will cover the basics of theatrical clowning as well as the methodology behind the work of CWBSA. No previous clowning experience is required, however participants must have an invested interest in a performance field such as music, singing, dancing, circus, acting, and storytelling. At the end of the workshop, all participants will be placed onto the CWBSA artist database, and can be called on for future tours.

Bookings will be required, as space is limited.

Cost is R150 for the three-day workshop

Bursaries to cover workshop cost and local transport (public transportation within 100km radius of Durban city centre) are available upon request in an e-mail.
