Jazz Sessions feature Durban artists

Debbie Mari and Burton Naidoo will bring their distinctive jazz music to Chico's Lounge this week.

THE Burton Naidoo Trio graces Chico’s Lounge, The Jazz Sessions for the very first time on Thursday, 18 August at 7.30pm to 10.30pm

Burton Naidoo, is one of South Africa’s most promising and creative young pianists, Burton’s talent is rare and distinctive, with his approach to jazz always bordering on the adventurous and daring. Comfortable in a variety of musical ensemble settings, always probing the parameters of jazz performance, Burton displays an interesting flair and dynamism. Joining him on stage as they present to you the music of the jazz master composer Thelonius Monk, are Llewelyn Chetty on bass and the popular, versatile drummer, Bruce Baker.

Debbie Mari, Durban-based singer, pianist, music educator and community arts practitioner will also perform at Chico’s Lounge on Sunday, 21 August from 12 to 3pm. Mari is a lecturer in the Jazz Studies programme at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, School of Arts (Music) and has enjoyed many musical collaborations performing mostly selections of mainstream jazz standards and more recently selections of South African poetry. She performs regularly in Durban as vocalist and pianist in a range of musical settings. Besides her live performances, Debbie is equally passionate about teaching. Debbie (piano & vocals) will be joined by Ildo Nandja (bass) and George Mari (trumpet & percussion) for the Chico’s Sunday Jazz Lunch where you can expect to hear favourites from selected Diana Krall albums such as Devil May Care, East of the Sun and So Nice
