Free screening of ‘green revolution’ doccie

The Sukyo Mahikari Centre in Glenwood will have a free screening of award winning environmental documentary The Great Green Wall this Saturday afternoon, 23 April.

GLENWOOD’S Sukyo Mahikari Centre invites the community and friends of the environment to a free screening of award winning environmental documentary The Great Green Wall, this Saturday afternoon, 23 April.

According to Cliff Moodley, director of the Durban Mahikari Centre, the film documents one of the international spiritual organisation’s youth projects. “As Sukyo Mahikari practitioners, the environment is a big part of our focus. The Great Green Wall project is a project where our youth from around the world in partnership with the African Union are trying to build the “great green wall” and combat desertification that is impacting on 11 countries along the wall. The wall is from Senegal to Ethiopia. We are trying to plant indigenous trees along the route which is 7000km long and 15km wide,” he explained.

With their work cut out for them, the 150-200 young volunteers head to Senegal every August to physically plant these trees. The story inspired a Polish documentary team to make a movie of the work done in the project. The film won the Angel Peace Award at the Monaco Film festival last year.

The film will be screened at the Durban Mahikari Centre, 134 Esther Roberts (Frere) Road from 4pm to 6pm.
