Supporting a world without rape and violence

The KZN Philharmonic supports the Diakonia Council of Churches' Thursdays in Black initiative.

THE philosophy of 16 days of Activism, highlighting violence against women and children, should extend all year – not just in December, and an easy way of ensuring that the conversation is being kept alive throughout the year is by wearing black every Thursday.

The KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra performs in black every Thursday evening and is encouraging women and men to also wear black every Thursday to create awareness around issues of gender justice, violence against women and corrective rape.

The Diakonia Council of Churches, the SA partners in this global campaign, supplies buttons and armbands with the slogan, Thursdays in Black – towards a world without rape and violence and encourages everyone to wear black and wear a button or armband on Thursdays.

The KZN Philharmonic Orchestra is presenting its six-week 2016 World Symphony Series: Summer Season, performing an extraordinary programme of beautiful music on Thursday evenings until 31 March, showcasing some of the finest musical talents from South Africa and the world.

The third concert takes place in the Playhouse Opera on Thursday 3 March at 7.30pm and sees Alexei Ogrintchouk principal oboist from Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (a symphony orchestra in the Netherlands) perform as both as conductor and soloist as part of a new collaboration between the RCO and the KZNPO in a concert featuring both a classical and a chamber repertoire.
