KZNPO celebrates Heritage Day

Explore vibrant global cultures in concert with the ‘Africa’s Premier Orchestra’, the KZNPO, this Thursday.

THE KZN Philharmonic Orchestra invites music lovers to join in celebrating Heritage Month with an excitingly themed heritage concert at the Durban City Hall this Thursday 24 September at 7.30pm.

Netherlands-based Arjan Tien makes a popular return to the Durban concert podium to conduct an eclectic programme that explores South African and other cultures from around the world.

The programme opens with the show-stopping Danzón No 2 by the Mexican composer Arturo Márquez. The work, which premiered 21 years ago, became known as the signature piece of the Venezuelan maestro, Gustavo Dudamel, and his virtuoso Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra, offering a dazzling amalgam of Central American and Caribbean dance influences.

The world renowned tabla musician, Sandeep Das, a noted recording star, then takes centre stage in a performance of Sri Lankan composer Dinuk Wijeratne’s Concerto for Tabla and Orchestr, before the orchestra shows its classical paces in a performance of Mozart’s four-movement ‘Little” G Minor Symphony No 25.

The evening’s fare concludes with a rousing selection of South African choral classics, for which the orchestra will be joined by the prize-winning Clermont Community Choir.
