Catch this theatrical adventure

Catch Jacobus van Heerden in his delightful one-man adventure show at the Glenwood Community Festival next week.

MULTI talented Durban actor, Jacobus van Heerden, will present his quirky, family-friendly one-man rollicking adventure, Catch! at the 2015 Glenwood Community Festival, at the Glenwood Preparatory School Hall on Friday, 4 September at 7pm.

Through a brilliant combination of performance, storytelling, and ultra violet props, Van Heerden tells the hilarious story of an unlikely friendship between Felix and Fred.

Felix is a 22-year-old wannabe rock star who runs away from home in search of adventure while Fred is a 12 year old bird-watching nerd sent to live with his Gran, Glynis, for a year. Both are newcomers to the town of Knysna and before long they embark on an illicit night-time fishing expedition which goes horribly wrong. Forced into raising R5,000, they enter a fishing competition in the hope of catching their salvation.

Van Heerden said Catch! was partly inspired by his own experiences as a young boy. “I lived in Knysna for a few years when I was younger, and that was a very influential time in my life. I went on all these adventures and fished a lot. So I drew on all these experiences. It is important to write from your own experience. It is always best to be the best version of yourself, rather than the second-rate version of someone else,” he said.

Catch! won PANSA’s Musho Theatre Festival Audience Vote Award and Suliman Selection Award in 2007, and has had subsequent theatre seasons including playing the Hilton Festival in 2008 and has toured to various festivals around the country as well as performing in Zimbabwe at the Harare International Festival of the Arts.

Catch! Is written and performed by Jacobus van Heerden and directed by Liam Magner. Bryony Birch in her Musho review said: “Cobus van Heerden could charm a fish right out of the water,” and the late Dr Maurice J Kort said: “Catch! is beautifully scripted and performed …brilliant and extremely funny.

Jacobus van Heerden was the diminutive Lord Farqaad in KickstArt’s recent musical, Shrek. He has also been in their thriller, Popcorn, was the prince in Sleeping Beauty, an was in Little Shop of Horrors and The Ladykillers. He won accolades for his one-hander comedy, Le Chop Royale at Musho festival, 2013; he played the title role in Hamlet; has been in two adult pantos and may best known for his irreverent, quirky, original musical comedy sketches with Liam Magner – the Neon Anthems.

Van Heerden has produced and presented the documentary Beyond and Back; playing the role of Peter Churchill in the SABC TV1 drama series, Fallen; and has played the lead in MNet’s Commando. Although he still acts, he spends most of his time working as a producer and director on a range of film productions.
