Show highlights soul music

A fundraising show will highlight the contrasts between soul legends from Atlantic Records and those from Tamla Motown.

COMMUNITY project, SA Can (South African Community Arts Network), presents Do you love Soul Music on 6 August at the Teressane Hall in St Theresa Road, Sydenham, at 7pm.

This is an exciting musical revue highlighting the contrasts between soul legends from Atlantic Records and those from Tamla Motown, and will raise funds for St Theresa’s School.

Wexler took Atlantic Records to the South of America because he discovered the artistes there staged their songs with church fervor encapsulating the most intimate emotions, such as the need to be loved, the frustration of not being loved, and the ecstasies of being loved. With not much grooming as such, Wexler’s aim was to capture these emotions on record. His efforts gave rise to soul legends such as Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Percy Sledge and Wilson Pickett.

Motown is a classical and universally popular “rags to riches” story not only for Gordy, the founder but also for most of the artists that he launched. He placed more emphasis on image and smooth harmonies and went out of his way to groom his artistes. This gave rise to greats such as The Four Tops, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and many others.

Do you love Soul Music? brings all these soul greats together in one show – using the talents of Pinkie Mtshali, Bruce Eaves, Gugu Mzobe and Diego Da Costa.

Narration is comically delivered by Gail Snyman and Hamish Kyd.

The revue is devised and directed by Hamish Kyd.

For tickets, contact Miss Cole or Mr Akkers at St Theresa School on 031 208 9477.
