Add an avo for breakfast

It is avo season and what better way to add a delicious twist to breakfast with this healthy option.

‘EAT breakfast like a king’, the old saying goes. Well, add an avocado to your breakfast table and you certainly can! With its melt-in-your-mouth creaminess, subtle buttery flavour, and downright luxurious appeal, it’s easy to give your family’s breakfast favourites the royal treatment.

If toast is your morning must-have, give boring the boot and jazz up your daily bread with slices of avo topped with a poached egg; chopped chorizo and goat’s milk cheese; or a sprinkling of dukkah and freshly ground pepper.

Add a little je ne sais quoi to your French toast by piling your golden brown slices of toast high with crispy bacon rashers drizzled with genuine maple syrup. The crowning glory? Slices of gorgeous fresh avo, of course!

The quintessential royal breakfast must be eggs royale – eggs Benedict with smoked salmon instead of ham, dressed with avo wedges and fresh Hollandaise sauce.

Did you know that you can even add an avo to your morning muesli or power smoothie? It’s true, for an extra health kick, blend half an avo with a couple of tablespoons of Greek yoghurt and layer this alternatively with muesli in a glass, trickled with honey for a picture-perfect breakfast parfait.

Or puree one avo with three tablespoons of chocolate peanut butter and a cup of plain yoghurt, or with a handful of fresh berries, a dash of maple syrup and a cup of plain yoghurt for smoothies fit for a king (or queen!).

Adding avos to your rise-and-shine menu is a great way to start your day. They boost your daily intake of monounsaturated fats and essential nutrients such as potassium, folic acid and vitamin C – they’re proven to be heart-healthy and effective fighters against ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol; and they may be associated with improved diet quality and beneficial nutrient intakes*
