Family fun theatre at Musho Fest

Daisy Spencer returns to the stage for the first time this year in The Great Big Enormous Turnip, a children's theatre piece which is part of this week's Musho Festival.

The Musho Festival of one and two hand theatre starts the Durban theatre calendar with a bang with an exciting line up of storytelling, comedy, drama and children's theatre.

Award winning Durban actress, Daisy Spencer will be taking on the role of a mean old lady in The Great Big Enormous Turnip alongside Bryan Hiles as the grumpy old man.

Spencer confessed that she has a passion for children's theatre because, “Nothing beats the response you get from kids. They get so involved and just believe!” She said it was “absolutely” important to introduce children to theatre at a young age as it was very beneficial to children. “The more kids are exposed to theatre from a young age,the more supporters of the arts there will be in years to come.

“Theatre gives kids a chance to switch off from the demands of society. Theatre allows kids to be themselves and think for themselves, without the fear of a right or wrong version of who they are, or how they perceive things to be. There are no limits in theatre,” she added. The best thing is that their imaginations get to run wild.

“I play the old, mean and ugly lady in The Great Big Enormous Turnip. She is so much fun to play as she is deliciously and mischievously mean and nasty. She says what she wants and gets to laugh at the expense of her little old husband,” explained Spencer.

Speaking about the Musho Festival, she said the exciting thing about one and two-hander theatre was that it lends itself to small, intimate performances. “We really get a chance to connect with the audience and take them on a palpable journey that they can experience right there and then!”

The Great Big Enormous Turnip will be on at Catalina Theatre this Saturday at 12 noon. Tickets cost R50. Contact Catalina Theatre for bookings on 031 837 5999 or www.computicket.com.
