Christmas art expo

The African Art Centre encourages the public to shop local this festive season and support their current Christmas exhibition.

AFRICAN Art Centre in Florida Road recently launched its annual Christmas exhibition which will run until 15 January.

The African Art Centre, one of the longest surviving non-profit organisations of its kind in the country was established more than fifty years ago as a centre which promotes and develops the work of artists and crafters from KwaZulu Natal. “We continue to be actively involved in implementing sustainable development programmes which impart new skills and extend on already existing skills within the craft communities of urban and rural KwaZulu Natal. The annual Christmas Exhibition highlights the vibrant creative culture of KwaZulu Natal and will raise awareness about the economic benefits of supporting our local craft producers by buying locally,” explained AAC director, Sharon Crampton.

The exhibition features a wide range of affordable, original, handmade Christmas ornaments and gifts produced by crafters from around the province. The variety of products include beaded, embroidered and felt Christmas tree ornaments, colourfully beaded tableware, recycled cards and ornaments and Christmas gifts including jewellery, ceramics, candles and telephone wire products.

The products on the African Christmas exhibition culminated as a result of skills training workshops facilitated by the Development Team at the African Art Centre and focussed on promoting, supporting and stimulating craft producers, enhancing existing products and on developing new, innovative products. “Every purchase made from the African Art Centre provides income and employment for more than 600 crafters currently supported by the Centre,” added Crampton.
