Cultural calabash at UKZN

African music and dance students present the 2014 African Cultural Calabash at UKZN.

THE 9th Annual African Calabash is back at Howard College Theatre, on 18 October.

The third year students in the School of Arts at UKZN host the Calabash to celebrate African culture. The AMD (African Music and Dance) students feature their own member, Nozuko Nguqu, as part of the concert. Nguqu was a performing artist before she enrolled with UKZN, and is excited to showcase in the Calabash, as this is her last year at this University.

The concert also features Ikusasa Lethu (a professional touring ensemble at UKZN) and Umsindo theatrical dance group from Umlazi, which will be showcasing its vibrant repertoire of traditional dances. To align the concert with the event’s theme “Rebirth of Arts”, the concert features YDS Pansula dancers from Lamontville. As the Calabash is the community development programme to prepare the third year students for the outside world after graduation, the event will also give an opportunity to the rural group to perform.

Tickets are available at the Jazz Centre at R60 for visitors and R35 for students.
