Diwali festival

Preparations are underway for the 2014 FNB Durban Diwali Fair this month.

THE South African Hindu Maha Sabha (SAHMS) is preparing for the biggest and best FNB Durban Diwali (DDF) for 2014 which takes place from 17 to 19 October at the Old Durban Drive In site.

The theme for this year’s DDF is centred around the celebration of 20 years of a democratic South Africa. “It is extremely important we use the opportunity of the DDF to appreciate the role of our democratic rights which allow us to celebrate festivals such as Diwali in such a spectacular manner that we have become accustomed to,” said organiser Neeran Besesar.

The exciting three day programme will see SAHMS host senior citizens for an afternoon of fun and entertainment on Friday, 17 October, with a Chutney show open to the public in the evening. Saturday, 18 October starts off with the DDF Float Procession throughout the Durban CBD. A grand opening will be held in the evening where international and local artists will be showcased as well as the magical fireworks display, overseas trips to be won and a rocking bhangra.

Sunday, 19 October includes the Hawan Ceremony and all festival-goers are welcome to participate. There will also be a Schools Art Competition and exhibition with iPads and other exciting prizes up for grabs.

Throughout the weekend, there will be an on-site temple, food and shopping stalls, a mini amusement park for kids and celebrity cooking demos to inspire your inner chef.
