Taking a look at WW1

Take a look at aspects of WW1 with LifeLong Learning.

LIFELONG Learning (LLL) will take a social and historical look at WW1 on Saturday, 9 August from 10.30am at the Chantecler Hotel in Botha's Hill.

LLL will emphasise the positions of the six empires in Europe at the time before the outbreak of the Great War. Thereafter, over the four years, various other topics will be covered such as artillery, medical, music and poetry and pacifists.

The day’s programme will start with refreshments, before the film, On the Idle Hill of Summer voiced by Michael Redgrave, is shown at 11am.

A look at the geo-political map of 1914 will be next on the agenda, before the next activity at noon, What did they say? What were they thinking? – a medley of quotations which illuminate the reasons for the war from different perspectives.

The film 1st World War: to Arms will be shown after lunch. This series is based on the books and encyclopedic knowledge of Professor Hugh Strachan. It examines every aspect of the war, from its causes to the conduct of the war on and behind the front lines to its aftermath.

A discussion and planning for forthcoming WW1 centenary lectures and events with tea and coffee will end off the day.

Cost is R180 or R160 if booked and paid for in advance. Visit: www.lllkzn.net
