Nine year old dies in crash

It was a dreary and wet Monday with many accidents around Durban and surrounds including a crash whihc left a nine year old boy dead on the N2 near Umgeni Road.

A nine year old boy was been killed in a serious roll over accident on the N2 North bound before Umgeni Road just after 2.30pm on Monday.

Garrith Jamieson, Operations Director at Rescue Care paramedics said Rescue Care and EMRS paramedics arrived on the scene to find a single vehicle lying on its side, while next to it lay the lifeless body of the nine year old boy. “Paramedics quickly assessed the child but found he had suffered fatal injuries and had passed away before paramedics arrived. He was declared deceased,” Jamieson said.

It is unclear what caused the acciden,t however SAPS were on the scene and will be investigating the incident further. Nobody else was injured in the crash.

“Traffic was severely affected as only two lanes of the freeway was open to allow traffic through. When Rescue Care paramedics left the scene the traffic was backed up all the way to Spaghetti Junction,” he added.

In an earlier incident, five people were injured after a rubbish truck and a vehicle collided in Ridge Road Overport just after 8am this (Monday) morning.

“Our paramedics arrived to find the car and the truck a distance apart. They quickly assessed the situation and found the truck driver entrapped in the truck as it had hit a light pole. SAPS and Durban Fire Department were called to assist and the driver was cut free from the wreckage using the jaws of life. Once he was extricated from the truck he was transported with his four colleagues to a nearby private hospital. No one in the vehicle involved was injured in the collision,” explained Jamieson.

Traffic was also severely affected as the north bound lane was closed whilst emergency services worked to clear the scene.

Motorists are encouraged to drive with extreme caution especially during wet weather.
