From the horrific to the bizarre

Stories this week range from the horrific to the bizarre.

Stories in this week’s Berea Mail range from the horrific to the bizarre.  The discovery of the mutilated body of a homeless woman near Jameson Park brings home the sad fate of the many homeless who find themselves on the streets and living on pavements and parks.

The particularly gruesome and brutal attack on this harmless woman says a lot about the society we live in. Well done to Berea detectives who have worked quickly and, at the time of writing this, had assured us an arrest was imminent. We will all sleep better knowing the perpetrator/s of this horrific killing have been identified and arrested.

The bizarre story of the disappearance of Dietrich Scholz, a 72-year-old German man who was a familiar sight in Glenwood raises many questions. How can a man just vanish into thin air? What of the strange man found living on the property and in possession of the key to the house? How do vagrants manage to infiltrate a property strip it of items they can sell and vandalise it without someone raising the alarm? What has happened to neighbourliness?

Have we really retreated so far behind our high walls and locked doors that we don’t care about our neighbours – their safety, their well-being? I can only hope that someone, somewhere saw something that can shed light on the disappearance of Mr Scholz. I urge anyone who has even the slightest information, perhaps you can remember where and when you last saw Mr Scholz, or you may have heard something about the eccentric old man, to contact police or Charmaine Galbraith.
