New year babies

Seven babies were born at local Netcare hospitals on new year's day.

SEVEN beautiful new bundles of joy were born at local Netcare Hospitals on 1 January 2014.

At Parklands Hospital, maternity staff were kept busy with six babies born at varying times during the day.

Nomfundo Mbele was excited to welcome her little boy, Alwande, into the world at 5.10am, weighing in at 2.78kg. This was Nomfundo’s first child and she is definitely a doting mum!

“It’s a great feeling. I can’t believe I’m actually a mom, he’s so cute! I have always been the one to hold other people’s babies, but I never thought about the fact that I would actually be a mom one day. He’s my blood, mama’s boy, and he is now going to be the man of the house, as it’s just me and my mom at home. My mom is a very proud granny, she started crying when I was in labour!” said Nomfundo.

She said she had great dreams for her little boy and hoped he would be either a lawyer, CA or even the president of the country one day. “I just want the best for him, but he must be a good man,” she said.

John and Cheryl Robinson are the proud first time parents of Ella Grace, born at 9.15am, weighing 3.26kg.

“We’re definitely happy she was born in the new year, it’s much better than being in the old year!” said John.

“My husband was dead set on us having a January baby, so it worked out well, and she is so precious,” said Cheryl.

The couple are very happy with their new addition and said she had been a very easy baby so far.

Belinda and Gerhard Goosen were proud to show off their little boy, Keagan, who was born at 4.35pm at a healthy 3.4kg.

“We’re excited he was born on 1 January. It is definitely the easiest birthday to remember and has been a great start to the year,” said Belinda.

This is their first child, and Belinda said they couldn’t wait to get him home.

“We look forward to being at home and enjoying him. Our stay in hospital has gone so fast,” she said.

Gerhard said they didn’t have any specific dreams for Keagan’s future, and that they would leave him to be his own individual.

“Well, I always say, he must have his dad’s looks and his mom’s brains!” said Belinda.

Dr Sonia Roopnarain and Preggie Pillay were clearly besotted with their little son, Seth Shreyan Pillay, who was born at 8.03am weighing in at 2.83kg.

“He is such a blessing! He is our first, our one and only, and we are very elated and excited. It has been the perfect start to the year to bring a new life into the world. The Lord has blessed us exceedingly,” said Sonia.

“Before the baby was born Sonia said she would be taking three months off work, but now that he has been born, she said she would like to take three years off, she doesn’t want to leave him now!” said Preggie.

“We hope to be the best parents we could possibly be and aim to cherish each moment with Seth. Life is so short and unpredictable and we want to enjoy all the time we have with him,” said Sonia.

Claire and Garth Moffatt welcomed their second daughter into the world at 1.24pm on 1 January.

Isla was born weighing 3.6kg. She was due on 6 January, however Claire was induced due to Isla’s weight.

“We’re very happy she was born on 1 January as it’s such a good date! We’re loving having her around so much that I’m already thinking about the third baby, however I haven’t discussed this with my wife yet!” joked Garth.

The couple’s first child, Sienna, will turn three on 7 January.

“We have lots of dreams for Isla, we hope for the best in her life. So far she has all her fingers and toes and her health, and I dream that she remains healthy in her life,” said Garth.

Only one baby was born at St Augustine’s Hospital on 1 January.

Wade Pillay and Nadia Heymans were excited their baby boy, Malakai, was born on new year’s day.

Malakai made his appearance at 11.16am weighing 4.09kg.

“At our 4D scan we were told he would be born on 1 January, although he was due on the 8th. This is our first child, and maybe even our last!” said Nadia.

“Our little boy is definitely not fragile, he kicks like a little ninja! We’re pleased we had a boy, and were expecting it, although some people said I was carrying low, as if it was a girl,” she said.

The couple said they hadn’t thought of what they wanted for their son’s life, as they were just so overwhelmed at being parents, that the future must take care of itself.
