Dominic is on the road to becoming a BMX champion

The eight-year-old says his favourite part about BMX riding is making friends and being motivated to give it his best.

ALTHOUGH Glenwood resident Dominic Eggar is only eight years old, he is on the fast track to becoming a BMX riding champion, qualifying for his South African Numbers for BMX riding at the mere age of six years old and competing in numerous national championships since the beginning of his BMX career.

Dominic says that BMX riding is in his blood with five members of his family being BMX champions before him. “My grandfather, Arthur Eggar, was the KZN BMX chairman; my uncle, Eugene Eggar, was KwaZulu-Natal’s Number One champ and the South African Number One champion – he was also chairman of the Queensburgh BMX Club. “My uncle, Raymond Eggar, was the KwaZulu-Natal Number Three champ and South African Number Nine champ. My father, Jonathan Eggar, was the KwaZulu-Natal Number Two champ and is currently the vice-chairman for the Queensburgh BMX Club. My cousin, Dylan Eggar, had 11 consecutive SA Number 1 wins in Men’s Elite and nine World Numbers, his best World Number being three. And my cousin, Kayla Eggar, achieved Eight World Numbers, her best World Number being two.”

Dominic started his BMX riding journey in 2021. “My dad took me to my first race, which was hard. I then watched videos of my cousin, Dylan, and wanted to be able to do what he could and make my family proud.” Dominic excelled from the very beginning, coming third in South Africa in 2021, and in 2022, he raced at expert level for South Africa and came second in KwaZulu-Natal in 2022.

“I’m most proud of the fact that I achieved my SA Numbers and jumped 16 places in my second year of racing for my club.”

He says he wants to go to the World Championships one day and make his family proud. When he grows up, he wants to be a coach who helps people in the sports industry.
