Durban Surf win KZN Nipper Champs

Durban Surf was followed by Umhlanga Rocks in second and Marine in third.

DURBAN Surf took the title at the KZN Lifesaving Nipper Championships on 15 and 16 February.

Courageous nippers from up and down the KZN coast braved big waves, blue bottles and scorching hot sand to compete for top honors in what turned out to be a most enjoyable event for all involved.

It’s been said before, lifesaving as a sport has a place for everyone and this year it showed. Once again, several young athletes who only joined the sport for the first time this season were able to earn valuable points for their clubs in both the beach and water disciplines. From the U9s all the way through to the experienced U14s, everyone challenged themselves and made themselves, their parents and their clubs proud. In the wonderful spirit of lifesaving, the camaraderie of all the youngsters ensured friendships and rivalries with fellow competitors from rival clubs would last well into adulthood.

Dustin Ambrose from Durban Surf said: “While the emphasis is to have fun, KZN Champs is a hard-fought competition attracting clubs from all along the KZN coast. A special mention must go to the smaller clubs like Scottburgh and Warnadoone who always arrive with a great attitude and quality competitors who certainly hold their own against the stronger central clubs. In the end there must be a winning club, and for 2020 the honors went to Durban Surf Lifesaving Club.”

Durban Surf was followed by Umhlanga Rocks in second and Marine in third.
