LOCAL upper limb amputee and jiu-jitsu athlete, Jason Brown, is appealing to the community to help him to raise funds to travel to events to raise awareness of disability in the sport.
Jason, (47) is a jiu-jitsu practitioner and a certified International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) Level 1 Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) coach, and currently also sits on the KwaZulu-Natal MMA Board.
“I want to be able to attend local and international events, take part in jiu-jitsu competitions and make people aware that people with disabilities can be part of the sport of MMA and jiu-jitsu, and can also be on management structures and be able to take part against able-bodied opponents,” he said.

Jason, who will take part at the United Arab Emirates Jiu-Jitsu Federation (UAEJJF) Africa Continental Pro on 1 March in Cape Town, is aiming to raise R30 000 via his BackaBuddy fundraising page.
“Reaching my target will mean that I would have the funds to be able to travel and be a part of the processes to show that disability in combat sports is addressed and that we have a valuable opportunity and say in the sport,” he said.
Money raised will go to flights to and from the events, entrance fees to events as a competitor, and funds raised will be paid directly to the relevant institution.
