Conditions ease for ideal Friday at Marine

It was a case of young and old with Hank McGregor taking his first win of 2020 while Saskia Hockly won her first-ever long course race in the Marine Series.

FOLLOWING a number of cancelled races due to dangerous sea conditions, Friday night’s race five of the 2020 Marine Series went off in perfect sea conditions as series legend Hank McGregor returned to win while young Saskia Hockly won the ladies singles.

It was a case of young and old with multiple-time series winner McGregor taking his first win of 2020 while Hockly, who is still a junior, won her first-ever long course race in the Marine Series.

The sharp end of the race saw McGregor cruise to victory by nearly a minute with Hamish Lovemore, who produced a fantastic third at the recent N3TC Drak Challenge presented by FNB, continued his good form to finish just ahead of Brandon van der Walt in second. It was a first race of the series for McGregor and following a long rest due to illness didn’t miss a beat as he showed his class to take the overall victory.

It was an impressive display from young Lockly who finished as the first women’s single in a time of 44:51, just under two minutes ahead of second place Lyn Bennett.

The first women’s boat across the line was the double of Kyeta Purchase and Kerry Segal who showed why they combined at the World Marathon Championships a few years ago.

The pair of river racing star Stew Little and Soyen Maietti came home as the first double across the line in sixth place overall ahead of Shaun Burgin and Richard Loute.

The popular short course saw marathon racing ace Alex Masina take home overall honours ahead of the William Dowsett and Paul Martin in a double with Nicholas Cook finishing third.

Raquel Gomes Robbins was the first woman over the line in the short course ahead of Teegan Hardwick in second and Monique Boschoff in third.

The Marine Series continues next week with race six of 10 taking place at Marine Surf Lifesaving Club on Friday.
